La Paz, Baja California Sur: Experiences, beaches and insider tips

La Paz, the charming capital of the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico, is one of the best-kept secrets for travelers who want to experience authentic Mexico. My love for La Paz began the last time I traveled through Baja California. I still remember renting a car with my then partner and exploring the region full of adventure. From La Paz to Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos and Los Barriles, it was an unforgettable experience that made me appreciate the beauty and diversity of this region. With its stunning beaches, rich marine life and laid-back vibes, La Paz is the perfect destination for those looking to escape the tourist crowds. In this post, I want to tell you about my personal experience in La Paz and show you why this city should definitely be on your bucket list.

Why visit La Paz Mexico?

La Paz immediately captivated me with its picturesque location on the Gulf of California, also known as the "Sea of Cortez." The Sea of Cortez was once called the "Aquarium of the World" by Jacques Cousteau - and rightly so! The region offers crystal clear waters, a variety of marine life and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere that attracts travelers from all over the world. Here I had the opportunity to enjoy some of the most breathtaking natural experiences Mexico has to offer.

The best time to visit La Paz

The best time to visit La Paz is between November and April. During this time, temperatures are pleasantly mild, ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking or days at the beach. It is also a great way to escape the cold winter in Germany. The weather was pleasantly mild during my stay and I was lucky enough to see whales, as the gray whales visit the region every year to calve here. An unforgettable experience that you shouldn't miss!

Playa Balandra - The Dreamlike Natural Beach

Playa Balandra is a true paradise for me and is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico for good reason. The crystal clear, shallow water is perfect for swimmers of all ages and the surrounding nature reserve makes this beach particularly idyllic. On the beach there is the famous rock "El Hongo" - the mushroom - which most people photograph and which you often see online. Of course we photographed that too! I wondered how this rock is still standing because it looks like it could collapse at any moment, which makes it all the more impressive. If, like me, you are looking for a pristine and quiet place where you can just relax, Balandra is the place to go. My tip: come early as access is restricted to protect the natural area.

Malecon de La Paz - Strolling along the shore

The Malecon, the waterfront promenade of La Paz, is the heart of the city and definitely a place you shouldn't miss. I spent hours here just strolling around, admiring street performers and taking a break in small cafes. The Malecon comes to life especially in the evening and the sunsets are simply breathtaking. For me, this was the perfect place to enjoy the local flair and immerse myself in the culture of the city.

Culinary Highlights

La Paz is known for its fresh seafood and authentic Mexican cuisine, which is strongly influenced by its coastal location. I particularly like the 'Camarones al Tamarindo' - a dish that offers the perfect mix of sweet and savory. The first time I tried it, I was not vegan and enjoyed the classic version with shrimp. However, I have now prepared a vegan version with king oyster mushrooms, which tastes just as good and perfectly captures the flavors of the region. In addition to the seafood, the local fish tacos and the various ceviche variants are also highly recommended. They reflect the freshness and variety of the regional cuisine and make every meal a special experience.

day trip to Isla Espíritu Santo

A big recommendation from the locals is a trip to the island of Espíritu Santo, which I unfortunately didn't manage to do due to lack of time, but I have definitely planned for my next visit. The island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers crystal clear water, rocky cliffs and an impressive variety of marine life. Many operators offer day trips including lunch and equipment - this makes the trip very relaxed and uncomplicated.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

La Paz is one of the few places in the world where you have the opportunity to swim with whale sharks. These peaceful giants visit the waters around La Paz from October to May.

Insider tips for your trip to La Paz

  • Rental car: In my opinion, a rental car is the best way to explore the region around La Paz. This way you can also visit hidden beaches and places that are difficult to reach by public transport.

  • Experience the sunset: One of my favorite sunsets was at Playa Coromuel. Pack some snacks and enjoy the colorful scenery - it's really worth it.

  • Local Events: La Paz offers many festivals and events, such as the Carnival in February. These events are a great opportunity to experience the culture and hospitality of the locals first hand.

Conclusion: La Paz, Mexico – An insider tip for explorers

La Paz, Mexico, has fascinated me and is a perfect destination for those who are looking for nature, adventure and relaxation in equal measure. With its beautiful beaches, spectacular marine life and authentic flair, the city offers an incomparable experience off the beaten tourist track. Whether you are swimming with whale sharks, strolling along the promenade or simply enjoying the sunset - La Paz will enchant you as much as it enchanted me.
