Bacalar: The Lagoon of 7 Colors

Bacalar: Die Lagune der 7 Farben

When I started my journey from Playa del Carmen to Bacalar, I had no idea that I would discover one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world. It was a day trip, but it felt like an unforgettable journey through another world.

The Bacalar Lagoon is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating sights in Mexico. It covers an area of 42 square kilometers and is surrounded by a unique variety of plant and animal species. The lagoon is known for its crystal clear waters, which shimmer in different shades of blue and green depending on the depth and the sunlight. Some parts of the lagoon are up to 90 meters deep and form so-called "cenotes", underground freshwater caves that are particularly interesting for snorkelers and divers.

During the boat tour on the Bacalar Lagoon, I had the opportunity to see the diversity of the region's flora and fauna up close. I was able to observe different species of birds and reptiles.

Another highlight of the boat tour was the visit to the "pirate canals". These canals lead through the dense mangrove forest and are named after the pirates who once operated in the area. The guide told us the legends and stories of the pirates and the loot they captured on their raids.

Overall, the boat tour on the Bacalar Lagoon was an incredibly enriching experience. I was able to experience the natural beauty and culture of the region up close and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the lagoon. It is a place that I would recommend to any traveler who is visiting Mexico and wants to discover the beauty of the Caribbean.
